Workshop: Homeland Security Tabletop Exercise

  • Abstract:
    This tabletop exercise will examine the coordination, collaboration, information sharing, and response capabilities of cybersecurity programs in reaction to a significant cyber incident.
    Scenario: A threat actor targets a system administrator through a phishing email as an entry point into your organization’s networks/systems. Attackers compromise Personally Identifiable Information.

  • Objectives: 
         1. Examine the ability for participants to respond to a significant cyber incident.
    2. Evaluate the ability for participants to coordinate information sharing during a significant cyber incident.
    3. Inform development/update of participants cyber incident response plans.
    4. Explore processes for requesting additional incident response resources once participants resources are exhausted.
    5. Explore participants processes for addressing public affairs.

Workshop: Network Debugging with NetSage and perfSONAR

  • Abstract: End-to-end performance issues are still common on R&E networks, and the ever changing nature of these networks means that previously solved problems may resurface again at any time. Proactive measurement, analysis, and troubleshooting are necessary to ensure the level of transfer performance that modern scientific research demands. One of the most common questions in this cross-domain network troubleshooting space is “Where do I start?”. This hands-on workshop will demonstrate the methodology behind identifying potential network performance issues using flow and SNMP data from NetSage, and then pinpointing the specific nature of the problem using the perfSONAR toolkit, even if the problem exists outside of your campus or regional network.
  • Objectives:
    1. Increased understanding of how to interpret flow and SNMP data in NetSage.
    2. Increased ability to utilize perfSONAR to locate and troubleshoot cross-domain network performance issues. 

Workshop: Internet2 CLASS Google Cloud Essentials Workshop

  • Required Equipment: Participants should bring a laptop with an up-to-date browser, wireless Internet (WiFi), and a Google account of some form (either personal or with their institution).
  • Abstract: The Internet2 CLASS Google Cloud Essentials workshop is a Carpentries inspired hands-on introduction to Google Cloud (GCP). We will be following the cloud journey of Drew, who is an ecologist, working with LandSat data and how they bring their work from their laptop into the cloud. We will be covering the basics of storage and computation and the basics of how to interact with the cloud.
    The goal of this workshop is to get researchers and research computing and data professionals started with Google Cloud and give them the background and confidence to be able to learn more on their own and to monitor costs. No prior cloud experience is required and access to Google Cloud will be provided. However, learners must have prior experience with Linux and the command line shell. The Carpentries “The Unix Shell” lesson provides an excellent introduction to the required background (https://swcarpentry.github.io/shell-novice/).
  • Objectives:
    1. Gain an understanding of essential aspects of Google Cloud services, resources, accounts, and billing.
    2. Gain an understanding on how to use Google Cloud web console and Command Line Interface (CLI) to access and manage resources.
    3. Experience provisioning basic cloud compute and storage resources.
    4. Experience creating a basic research workflow in the cloud.
    5. Gain an understanding of costs, billing, and how to manage them.

Workshop: STINGAR - Honeypot Setup and Processing Threat Intelligence Data

STINGAR is Shared Threat Intelligence for Network Gatekeeping and Automated Response, a project developed by Duke University to enable low friction generation of threat intelligence, data sharing, and action on threat intelligence for the higher education community.

  • Target Audience: CISO, IT security engineers and analysts
  • Cost:  Free to registered conference attendees
  • Workshop Size:  Limited to the first 30 people who register.
  • Required Equipment: Laptop, virtual machine setup in advance (2GB RAM, 64bit Processor, Linux (Ubuntu or CentOS, CentOS 7 still recommended), Storage of >250GB Disk space). It is recommended the virtual machine be established in your environment if you plan to use the honeypot as a continued sensor/collector. Using a VM hosted on a laptop is acceptable but will not be a long term solution for use of honeypot intelligence.
  • Abstract: This workshop is intended to be a working session with a presentation and a live demonstration. It will include walking the audience through the steps necessary to deploy network sensors (honeypots) on their own campuses and begin to ingest the STINGAR feed by connecting to the Nebraska instance.
  • Objectives:
    1. Learn to set up and deploy honeypots
    2. Learn how to process threat intelligence data from the STINGAR feed

Workshop: Setting Up Research Jobs in the PRP Nautilus Kubernetes HyperCluster

  • Prerequisites: Experience with Linux/Unix CLI, Creation of Nautilus Account

  • Workshop Size: Limited to the first 35 people who register.
  • Required Equipment:  Attendees should bring laptops with Chrome Browser to follow along to spin up Kube PODS and jobs
  • Abstract: This interactive workshop will provide an overview of the NSF-funded Pacific Research Platform Nautilus HyperCluster, and the use of Containers and Kubernetes for scalable, repeatable research computing. Attendees will learn hands-on to create Kubernetes pods, persistent storage, and jobs.  They will learn to move data between systems and the persistent storage, as well as launch interactive pods for data preparation. Attendees will learn to launch and monitor jobs within Nautilus, performing parallel machine learning research workloads during the tutorial.
  • Objectives:
    1. Learn to launch Kubernetes pods for interactive access to containers as well as jobs.
    2. Learn create and utilize persistent storage with your Kubernetes interactive sessions and jobs.
    3. Learn to use custom container images within Nautilus for research computing.
    4. Experience running parallel machine learning workloads.

The workshops are free and open to any registered attendee. However, you must register for each workshop through Eventbrite when you register for the conference. All workshops are limited in size, so get your registration in early to avoid missing out. The deadline for registering is Friday, May 27, 2022, 5:00 PM Central. If there are any special requirements for participating in a workshop, such as the need for a laptop, this information will be emailed to you prior to the workshop.
