Job Summary

The Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City’s Center for the Advancement for Data and Research in Economics (CADRE) https://www.kansascityfed.org/research/cadre is seeking an experienced High Performance Computing (HPC) System Administrator for its Research Operational Environment (ROE).

The ROE is a Linux based HPC system paired with a Massively Parallel Processing Data Warehouse platform. The combination provides a unique environment capable of supporting advanced data analytics on extremely large and complex datasets.

The ROE is designed to be a blend of the technologies typically found in a academic research environment with operational support processes found in enterprise IT to meet higher Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Key Activities

Installing, configuring and maintaining large computer clusters/servers and software.

  • Day-to-day operations of the systems including systems administration, monitoring and storage performance up to and including network components.
  • Management of the system’s backend network switch, parallel file system and HPC software stack and tools.
  • Configuration of the scheduling and queuing system.
  • Diagnosing and resolving system operational problems quickly and effectively.
  • Coordinating with vendors to resolve hardware and software problems.
  • Provide 3rd level support assisting users with access and other help desk ticket requests or issues.
  • Building and deploying open source and commercial software.
  • Documenting system administration procedures for routine and complex tasks.
  • Maintaining and monitoring the security of the HPC systems and servers.
  • Plans, organizes and leads office, District, or System projects, or phases of large projects.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree from a two-year college or technical school or equivalent combination of education and/or work related experience. Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university preferred.
  • At least three years of computer systems analysis/network administration and user support. Linux system administration in a large distributed computing environment preferred.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • At least one of the following Operating System training/certifications preferred:
    • Microsoft Certified System Administration or Engineer training/certifications
    • Current Unix/Linux Operating System training/certifications
    • Current VMware training/certification.
  • Strong multi-tasking, analytical and communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts to end-users and non-technical staff.
  • Demonstrated strong proficiency using multiple hardware/software platforms and/or significant expertise in a particular technology.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills preferred.
  • May require weekend or evening hours and being on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Experience with installing, configuring, and maintaining job management support tools such as Moab, TORQUE, SLURM, PBS preferred.
  • Experience with installing and troubleshooting research analytical applications such as SAS, Matlab, STATA, R, Spark preferred
  • Experience with parallel programming in research applications preferred
  • Experience working with provisioning software such as Salt, Ansible or Puppet preferred.
  • Proficient with at least two common HPC programming/scripting languages preferred. Preferred examples include: Python, Perl, PHP, C, C++, Fortran, BASH.
  • Experience with various flavors of Linux such as RedHat, Scientific Linux, CentOS, Ubuntu preferred.
  • Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux system administration such as NFS filesystems, Samba, Linux server configurations (including CentOS, Ubuntu), TCP/IP network, DNS, and DHCP, Remote Desktop, VNC, NXclient, ssh, shell scripting preferred
  • Excellent attention to detail preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to effectively build relationships; promote, and work well in, a collaborative team environment; and influence others preferred
