GPN SEGP NEWS:  Penning with the Pro’s

By Kristen Klaver

Want to know what’s going on in other GPN states?

The Great Plains Network currently has three states participating in the Internet2 Sponsored Education Group Participant (SEGP) program:  Missouri, North Dakota, and Oklahoma.  We are excited that both Kansas and Nebraska are in the process of submitting their paperwork to become SEGPs.

Current GPN SEGP members have formed a committee to identify a project for us to focus on this year.  We had several wonderful ideas but we chose "Penning with the Pro’s".

Penning with the Pro’s will be working with a selected grade level (TBD), which will interact with authors via videoconferencing, web pages, and streaming video.  The students will discuss the basics of writing, such as

a)     Where do ideas come from?

b)      How do I get started?

c)     How do I get published?

Students will use writing classes or writing instruction to develop poems, stories, articles, etc. and share them with students in other schools and GPN states. Then they will participate in a writing contest with the end result being a publication of the winning pieces of writing. The authors who participated will judge the contest in the on-going development.

We are at the beginning stages of the project so things could change, but we are planning on proceeding with the project for this school year (2003-2004).  We will be marketing/advertising nationwide and the Internet2 community.

If you have any thoughts or comments, or would like to participate, please contact Kristen Klaver or (405) 325-5774.
