Upcoming Member Meeting

At the upcoming GPN member meeting, Larry Ammiot from Northwestern University and Internet2 will be speaking about the Internet2 Commons project. The purpose of the project is to enable one-to-one, one-to-group, and group-to-group collaborative conferencing in support of personal communications, meetings, conferences, and shared education for Internet2 members (primary and sponsored) and their international counterparts. The plan is to provide a rich suite of collaboration tools and services over time that are as easy to access as it is to make a phone call today. News from the East

In this issue, Julia Abrahams, Program Director with the National Science Foundation, contributes a synopsis of several programs she manages. Look them over and contact Dr. Abrahams if you have questions. I have also included several other solicitations from a variety of sources to share.

NSF Advanced Networking Solicitations
The Advanced Networking Infrastructure section of our Division recently announced three solicitations: Middleware Development, High Performance Network Computing (HPNC) and Strategic Technologies for the Internet. Links to these solicitations are located at the NSF CISE web site. Program Directors will be assigned to each of these programs in the near future.

The HPNC program is aimed at hooking up new universities to a high performance network (e.g., Abilene, vBNS). It is a new version of the program under which many of the GPN members were connected to Internet2. Anyone for new members?

Keep an eye out for upcoming solicitations, including CyberInfrastructure and Networking Research. I will notify GPN subscribers as these solicitations are announced.

NSF Reviewers and Program Directors Needed
Want to get acquainted with NSF from the inside? Want to spend some quality time in Washington, DC? Want to raise your own visibility to Program Directors? May I suggest...
...volunteer to participate on a review panel: All proposals submitted to NSF are peer-reviewed. That means we, as Program Directors, constantly need folks to participate in panels here in DC or on ad hoc panels. This is EVERY DIRECTORATE AT NSF. Find your directorate and volunteer. Your participation will be greatly appreciated.
...sign up to become a Program Director. If you like DC and want to hang out for a year, contact a Division Director and start the dialog. Currently, CISE is looking for Program Directors. So are many other directorates.

Visit the NSF web site and contact someone. It could be a life-changing experience.

A select group of Kansas City politicians learn from Rick Summerhill that the Great Plains Network Spring Member Meeting will be held at UMKC.

Rogue Access Grid Nodes
A group of creative individuals from GPN who attended the Internet2 meeting in early March expressed interest in jumping into the midst of Access Grid technology using spare equipment. Gurcharan Khanna, from Dartmouth College, who taught me to use VIC and RAT--I don't have any idea what they mean, but I know they are essential components for AGN operation--is lending his experience as is Michael Grobe from KU. Tom Brenneman from UMKC has probably mastered a lot of this by now. Join this group by subscribing to the Great Plains/Access Grid mailing list. Write to these folks--they are really helpful (I started with "Where do I get VIC and RAT and what do they mean?").

Research Collaboration Meeting
The time for the Research Collaboration Meeting has changed to Fridays from 11AM to Noon Central. The first meeting will be this Friday, March 30, 2001. We can catch up on old business and plan for the future. Funding is a topic that I would like to briefly discuss. I can also help answer questions about the solicitations mentioned above.
