Internet2 News

As of February 4, 2001 the University of New Mexico's participant and connector connection was completed. Visit the University of New Mexico's website at www.unm.edu.

Network equipment manufacturer Cisco Systems, Inc. has given $257,300 to the University of Oregon (UO) Computing Center, the first installment of a nearly half-million dollar gift to bolster the UO's advanced networked computing efforts. The Computing Center plans to use the gift to expand its work in the area of IP multicast technology, an efficient way to distribute broadcast-quality multimedia programming over the Internet.

Review: GrantsNet Funding Database
by Greg Monaco

The GrantsNet funding database is run by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and is "your one-stop resource to find funds for training in the biomedical sciences and undergraduate science education." This makes it somewhat more specific than the Community of Science database (reviewed last week).

Here's what I learned after using GrantsNet.
  • You can go to the GrantsNet home page and join for free. There do not appear to be any features you must pay for;
  • You can search for funders in the alphabetical Funding Directory. The funding directory includes an extensive list of funders and their funding home pages. Keep in mind that this is limited to funding for training in biomedical sciences;
  • You may also search for grants in an undergraduate database as well as a graduate/postgraduate database;
  • Use MyGrantsNet to customize and save searches and grant information;
  • For some grants there is a GrantsNet synopsis. I really like this feature--it doesn't look as "canned" as the Community of Science;
  • Searches return a fixed number (10) with multiple pages (clumsy);
  • The user interface is superior. It's logical and easy to use (I've never had to use the Help Desk). I like the color scheme (I hope the Community of Science gets hip to the importance of this feature);
  • GrantsNet provides a lot of additional content for students, including grant writing tips, profiles of students who have written grants, career advice and much more
GrantsNet is well-designed and does exactly what it professes to do, putting the needed tools into the hands of the grant applicant..

Correction About NSF Day at KU

In the January 30, 2001 GPN Digest I wrote that KU was hosting an event on the Access Grid and that this event was open to other universities. I was wrong.

It has since come to my attention that this activity is actually part of an annual, internal event known as KU's annual funding forum. The forum is sponsored by the University of Kansas' Center for Research. The Center is making use of the Access Grid to present a variety of speakers from the National Science Foundation.

I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

NetWord of the Week
H.323 An umbrella recommendation from the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) that sets standards for multimedia communications over Local Area Networks (LANs) that do not provide a guaranteed Quality of Service (QoS). These networks dominate today's corporate desktops. The H.323 standard provides a foundation for audio, video, and data communications across IP-based networks including the Internet. By complying to H.323, multimedia products and applications from multiple vendors can inter-operate allowing users to communicate without concern for compatibility.
