- Open Microphone to Hear from Participants
- Action Items
Meeting accomplishments:
- Brought together
- Scientists and Researchers
- Information Technology Personnel
- Network Specialists
- Consultants on NSF proposal development
- Collaboration Specialists
- Brought in people from outside the Great Plains Network to
collaborate/participate
- Demonstrated the collective strength of GPN
- University of Missouri at Kansas City quickly and seamlessly
installed streaming video and made it possible for participation
around the United States
- Kansas State University provided leadership to identify what
is examined in the proposal review process and to demonstrate
what is needed in proposal development Demonstrated the ability
to quickly install a wireless network by GPN engineers The
group came together to commit to a series of action items
Action items:
- A server/web node for GIS data to be hosted by GPN (Gerry,
Francis, Rick)
- Meeting by GPN for GIS scientists to develop common interests
(to be determined)
- Re-examine the GPN role in developing Quality of Service standards
to more effectively assist researchers (Rick)
- Meeting by GPN for Research Officers to identify how to assist
in strengthening proposals by leveraging GPN expertise and the
advanced networking capabilities
- Proposal for Access Grid Nodes for universities who wish to
participate will be developed (Rick Summerhill, Linda Roos, Dan
VanBelleghem)
- Proposal will be developed to create a model for collaboration
using advanced networking capabilities and examining the social
science implications (Cathy, Linda, Greg)
- Develop a statement for researchers to include to strengthen
their proposals which point out the benefits of belonging to
GPN and the greater GPN community (Greg, Dennis, Jim?). It
would include Advanced Networking, Quality of Service, Consulting,
Networking Support, Database Development, Supercomputer Access
Support, Multicast
- Mail all participants one another's email addresses (Done)
- Reach out to end user community via direct contact, future meetings,
representatives attending meetings
Evaluation Results
- I "lurked" on the KC meeting for a couple of hours this
morning (Thursday) on Real Player and have the following
observations about the use of the technology (not the content).
First, it was a pretty good experience all in all. The sound
was good from the lectern, but generally bad from the audience.
When speakers, such as Rick, moved in front of the lectern
the sound virtually disappeared. Requiring a lapel mike for
the speakers could have helped. Leaving the microphone live
during the whole presentation picked up some side conversations
(esp. during the break) that people might be uncomfortable
having broadcast. Hearing the buzz during the break did give
a good feel for actually being there. I was frustrated at
not having the PowerPoint slides available, because the camera
operator didn't pick them up well and sometimes not at all.
That could be solved by simply having them available prior
to the Webcast. The picture and sound do progressively go
further out of sync as it proceeds. I needed to pause and
restart to get them back in sync.
- I enjoyed last week's workshop in Kansas City, particularly
the discussion groups on Wednesday morning -- although I must
confess that some of the more technical discussion passed
right over my head. I think the discussion panels were very
productive for everyone...
I'm also very glad to see that as one of the outcomes of last
week's workshop, GPN is planning to devote more effort to
outreach within the end user community...I also see user
needs assessment and outreach to end users as being critical
to the successful integration and advancement of the network's
capabilities within the scientific research community.
- good inspiring presentations, esp. in the area of actually research
initiatives
- I watched some of the meeting last week and it looked like it
went very well. Congratulations!
- The interaction among participants was informative and dynamic,
especially by end of the conference. Invigorating and
informative. The use of technology was outstanding.
Continue to show exemplary Internet 2 uses (like those shown
in Chatauqua 2000) and to discuss the technology and its
expanding uses (as in this conference). These have been
ourstanding programs!
Prepare an introductory awareness packet, module, or web-based
lesson about (1) what GPN can do for the researchers that is
different from other technology options and (2) how to get
on GPN/Internet 2 for research purposes. These were the two
main questions asked of GPN staff according to several
different people at the conference.
